LISD’s academics continue to be “big’’ news around East Texas

The academic teams competing for the Lindale ISD have once again proven that being bigger doesn’t always mean being better.

Despite being the smallest school in the district and the smallest in the state Class 5A division, LISD’s 6th-12th grade competing classes have once again won the district championship in UIL Academics.

The high school contests were held over a two-day period with 22 academic events. Lindale High School earned multiple team awards and 44 individual and team awards.

“I am so proud of my journalism team,” said Lindale High School journalism teacher, Neda Morrow. “Of the 12 available slots to regionals, my students got 7 of them. Each member of the team won a medal and four are now regional qualifiers. They have worked non-stop since October to improve their writing. They have given up their Saturdays and stayed after school many times. They take competition very seriously, and I am elated that their hard work paid off at district.’’

These students represent the best of today’s youngsters, Morrow said.

“I am especially fond of this particular group of competitors because they are excellent examples of the best of our country’s young people,’’ she said. “They are positive, they are hard-working and they completely support each other. I am proud and blessed to be their coach.”

Lindale ISD’s UIL Academic teams will now advance to the regional competition. They are hoping to gain enough points to compete at State and come home as the UIL Academic State Champions for the second year in a row.

“Our students, year after year, just amaze us with their great success,” said Lindale ISD Superintendent Stan Surratt. “To win the District Championship in UIL Academics is a wonderful accomplishment.’’

Surratt acknowledged the district’s well-known reputation for its academic prowess and this latest title is proof.

“Lindale ISD is known for its great academics and this 5A District Championship just strengthens that reputation,’’ he said. “Lindale High School won the 2017 State Championship in UIL Academics and hopefully we can successfully defend that this year. I am extremely proud of our Eagles.”
