Lady Eagles prepare for new season

Another season is under way for the Lindale High School Lady Eagles softball team, which participated in the Carthage High School Tournament on Feb. 16-18 and is scheduled to open at home on Feb. 21 against Pine Tree High School.

The LHS Junior Varsity begins at 4:30 p.m. at the LISD Baseball and Softball complex while the varsity gets under way at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Lady Eagles hosted their first alumni softball game at the softball field, with players spanning several generations returning to an enjoyable night on the diamond.

Lindale’s varsity claimed a 5-1 win and afterwards, everyone enjoyed a hamburger and hot dog supper.

“Our first alumni game was a success,’’ said a pleased head coach Meredith Grant. “Perfect weather, competitive current and past Lady Eagles and a great crowd – I especially loved watching the little girls cheer on their moms. Lindale is truly an amazing place.’’

On Friday, Feb. 10, the Lady Eagles concluded their scrimmage portion of this year’s schedule with both the varsity and junior varsity squads dominating Sabine High School.

The varsity Lady Eagles have three returning seniors to lead the way, with Michaela Walker, Mallory Welvaert, and Allie Thompson, who has signed with Texas A&M-Commerce.

To round out the squad, the Lady Eagles will field juniors Lorin Reue, Sarah Day, and Tyra Rodden; sophomores, Erica Boyd, Jodi DeHart, Hannah Knox, Deanna Saunders, Mykayla Walker, Anna Westberry, and Cailynn Widemon and freshman London Reue.

In addition to the varsity squad, Lindale is fielding two junior varsity teams made up of 26 underclassmen also set to compete this spring.

On Saturday, Feb. 4, the Lady Eagles traveled to Bullard for two scrimmages. They defeated Brownsboro 15-0 and Bullard, 6-5.

The Lady Eagles collected more than 20 hits in the two games.

On Monday night Feb. 6, the Lady Eagles toppled a Sulphur Springs squad that went into the regional round of the playoffs in 2016 by a score of 9-1.

“I’m excited about our program, and the start that we’ve had,’’ Grant said. “The energy has been amazing, and I can’t wait to see how all three of our teams progress this season.’’
