Lindale High School’s Lady Eagle volleyball team dominated the all district selections as coaches from 16-4A chose the top players. The Lady Eagles finished 10-0 in district and was 26-11 on the season. When she looks back on the 2012 volleyball season for her Lindale High School Lady Eagles, head coach Meaghan Koonce won’t dwell on the season-ending loss at the bi-district round.

Instead, she’ll remember how a team that finished third in district the season before dominated its new district – even after moving up in classification – and constructed a 26-11 record with a relatively young lineup.

Most of all, she’ll know that her girls were standouts in the classroom as well and after the all district teams were released recently they have the votes to prove it.

There were 11 Lady Eagles to earn Academic All District honors, as seniors Hannah Brown, Savanna Cantrell and Sarah McGregor joined juniors Nicole Borger, Sydney Tiiman, Madi Malone, Kaitlin Rice, Makenna Allen, Zhanelle Geathers, Sarah Crotser and Symonne Brookins on the elite squad.

As far as superlatives were concerned, Savannah Cantrell was named co-Most Valuable Player and Zhanelle Geathers was hitter of the year, while Sydney Tiiman, Makenna Allen and Hannah Brown were all named to first team All District.

Sophomore Travicia Acy was named to the second team as was Nicole Borger.

Kaitlin Rice earned honorable mention status.

“I was very happy for our girls,’’ Koonce said. “They deserved the recognition.’’

The coach was obviously pleased with the district and season records, but chalked up the bi-district loss to Mansfield Lake Ridge as one of the few times her girls weren’t quite up to par.

“They just didn’t come out playing well,’’ she said. “Maybe the ones coming back will learn from this experience.’’

However, she was especially proud of her player’s academic prowess.

“That’s one thing I don’t have to worry about,’’ she said, referring to team members’ study habits. “They take care of their business in class.’’
