Lindale High School graduate Kelsey Wells, now a freshman at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., won first place in the school’s Communication Arts Speech Contest held recently, officials announced.

Food pantry open house set May 19

An open house for the expansion of the David Powell Food Pantry, which helps families living within the Lindale Independent School District, is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 19 officials announced.

Armed Forces honored on May 18

Lindale’s American Legion Post 15 will be celebrating its fourth annual Armed Forces Appreciation Day beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 18 at the post located at 18251 County Road 498, legion officials announced.

Admission and parking are free. The event will continue until 3 p.m.

Fire dept. sets annual benefit fish fry Saturday

Members of the Lindale Volunteer Fire Department have scheduled their annual benefit fish fry at the Central Fire Station at 208 East Hubbard on Saturday, May 18 from 4 p.m. until the fish is gone, said spokesman Aaron Munn.

Included with the catfish meal will be French fries, cole slaw, fried jalapenos, potato salad, pinto beans, hush puppies and drinks.

The May Days event at the library (May 12) was a big success. The weather was great, and the old cannery building proved to be a perfect venue for the Plant and Vendor sale.

Many thanks to the city of Lindale for loaning it to us.

The community is in for a treat when the building opens as the new Lindale Farmers’ Market.

DAR installs new officers

MINEOLA – Charlene Rapp of Hideaway was installed as the new Regent of the Elizabeth Denton English Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution during a meeting held May 4, officials announced.

Anna Lee, a member of the Mary Tyler DAR Chapter and District VI Chairperson of the Texas Society, performed the installation of officers.

E.J. Moss earns fourth Distinguished Performance honor from Region 7

Lindale’s E.J. Moss Intermediate School has been honored as a Title 1, Part A Distinguished Performance School for the fourth year in a row by the Division of No Child Left Behind Program Coordination of the Texas Education Agency.

Campus and district administrators were recognized during a ceremony at the Region 7 Education Service Center in Kilgore on Tuesday, May 7.

The Lindale ISD Alumni Association is now accepting nominations for the 2013 Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Service Awards, association officials announced.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is given annually to a LHS graduate whose achievements, strengths of character and citizenship serve as a model to inspire and challenge current students.

Bibby’s office recovers stolen items in VZ County

Precinct 5 Constable Kenneth Bibby joined law enforcement officers from Van and Van Zandt County Wednesday night (May 8) in executing search warrants for a residence in Van Zandt County which resulted in the recovery of stolen property from residents in northwest Smith County, Bibby’s office confirmed.
